The Treaty of Windsor in 1386 between Portugal and England provided the foundation for this success through trade ties. By the 18th century, English and Scottish merchants transformed the Douro region into a major Port wine exporter.

How To Visit Douro Valley Wineries?
Self-Guided Tour
We recommend this option for independent travelers who prefer having control over their trip. A self-guided tour offers you the opportunity to create your own itinerary, visit lesser-known wineries, and save on costs. However, this come with its challenges. You will need to plan your route in advance, drive through unfamiliar, steep rural roads. Furthermore, on any best Douro Valley wine tour you will be drinking. Therefore, you will need to designate a non-drinking driver. If you decide on this route, we recommend pre-booking your winery visits and download offline maps to avoid getting lost.
Choosing a guided tour offers a stress-free experience. You won’t have to worry about driving or the logistics of getting around. You can sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery, listen to history about Douro Valley, and its exceptional wines. With a regional expert guide, you save time, gain insider knowledge about the region, and access the best wineries. As a result, guided tours will cost a premium for the convenience, especially for more private options. Additionally, there will be less less flexibility since the itinerary is pre-determined. For a more personal experience, consider booking a private or small-group tour.
