Once we made our booking online, we provided our hotel address and WhatsApp number. We found WhatsApp to be an incredibly useful communication app to easily connect with our guides. Our Mount Batur Jeep Tour Journey Schedule
3:45am – Our driver picks us up from our hotel in Ubud. Note, that you’re not picked up in a Jeep right away. However, you’re going to be brought to a Jeep near the base camp to begin the trek.
5:00am – We arrive at the Jeep pick-up where we switched cars and met our new Mount Batur Jeep Tour guide.
5:30am – It took about 20 minutes to get to the base camp. Upon arriving, we saw dozens of other jeeps waiting to catch the sunrise. Our driver found a prime spot for us and parked in between two other jeeps. While there are many other Mount Batur jeep tours like ours, several parking levels provide unobstructed sunrise views!
5:45am – Breakfast on top of the Jeep was served. It’s really simple, toast with a delicious banana jam, oranges, hard-boiled eggs, and 2 chocolate wafer bars.
6:00am – As we finish our breakfast, we see the sun beginning to rise. We had some clouds that day but it didn’t take away from the stunning views from our jeep.
The Moment: Witnessing the Spectacular Mount Batur Sunrise
The moment the sun starts to peak on the horizon of Mount Batur, it is breathtaking. As the first rays of sunlight pierce through the darkness, the sky transforms into vibrant colors. The sunrise we observed had shades of orange, pink, and gold across the landscape. We felt an immediate sensation of warmth gradually replacing the chill of the pre-dawn hours.
In the distance, you will see the magnificent backdrop of Mount Agung, Bali’s highest peak. As the sky continues to illuminate, Mount Agung’s silhouette becomes more pronounced, a contrast against the morning sky.

One of the advantages of booking a private Jeep tour is that your driver can also be your photographer. They’re eager to capture your precious moments and are very patient to ensure you get your desired photograph! We took advantage of this opportunity, snapping numerous pictures perched atop the Jeep’s racks. Our tour guide always ensured we were comfortable and ready to proceed. This allows us to savor the moment without feeling rushed.

To capture a unique perspective of Mount Batur and the colorful line of Jeeps, we used our drone. If you have a drone we do recommend launching it! Our drone is under 250g therefore, we never had any issues flying it anywhere around Bali. Capturing shots from the volcano with the vibrant jeeps and beautiful sunrise was an experience beyond compare. It added another layer of magic to our already unforgettable Mount Batur adventure. Drones simply provide a perspective that often can’t be seen or reached from the ground.
Exploring the Black Lava Near Mount Batur
Around 7 am, our Mount Batur jeep tour adventure continued! We’re off to visit the captivating Black Lava portion of the tour. The journey itself was nothing short of thrilling and incredibly scenic, reminiscent of scenes straight out of Jurassic Park. The dense fog enveloped the surroundings, adding an air of mystery to our experience.
As we traveled through the rugged terrain, we couldn’t help but admire the natural beauty that unfolded before us. The jeep ride provided glimpses of local farmers tending to their fields. We observed rice terraces stretching as far as the eye could see, and an abundance of untouched nature. After approximately 40 minutes of trekking through the picturesque landscape, we reached the mesmerizing Black Lava area.
Exploring the Black Lava Fields
The Black Lava fields near Mount Batur are a geological wonder, created by the volcanic eruptions of Mount Batur itself. These dark, rocky landscapes offer a surreal contrast to the lush greenery surrounding the volcano. While relatively lesser-known than the sunrise viewpoint, the Black Lava fields are a hidden gem worth discovering. The unique terrain provides an excellent backdrop for fun and adventurous photos, as we climbed atop lava formations.
During our visit, there were only a handful of other visitors which created a serene and uncrowded atmosphere. This tranquility, coupled with the captivating scenery, made the Jeep ride to the Black Lava fields truly worthwhile. If you’re looking for another less busy alternative to the thermal baths, we recommend this option!
Continuing to the Coffee Plantation
Around 8:30 am, we left the Black Lava in our jeep to meet our tour guide. We met our first driver who had picked us up from our hotel earlier. Our next destination, the charming Coffee Plantation. The drive was relatively short, taking roughly 30 minutes.
At the plantation, we had the delightful opportunity to sample a variety of local coffee and teas. I couldn’t resist trying the famous Luwak Coffee, known as the most expensive coffee in the world.
In some places, a single cup of this exquisite brew can cost a staggering $100. However, I had the privilege of savoring it for just 50,000 Indonesian rupiah, a truly remarkable and cost-effective experience.
Ending with a late lunch with a view
The Mount Batur Jeep tour has come to an end! We had our driver drop us off at a beautiful restaurant with a view of the bali rice terraces. We were interested in a brunch cafe in a peaceful and serene environment, Huma Cafe provided just that.
This cafe is a break from the busy main streets of Ubud allowing us to unwind after a busy morning. The menu offered many different options, we chose the tuna poke bowl, mint smoothie, and chicken sandwhich!
